How to connect phone to PC using USB cable (K500/K700/Z1010/Z500 series)
The instructions below are also available in a Getting started guide at your phone's support site at www.SonyEricsson.com/support. Select "Synchronizing the XXX with a PC" to download a PDF file.
The instructions focus on how to connect a phone with a PC running Microsoft Windows XP/ME/2000 SP3. The procedures, terms, and applications may differ slightly. In such cases, please refer to the manufacturer's product information.
Make sure that you have the following:
- At least 120 MB free hard disk space
- Internet Explorer 5.0 or later installed
- Windows ME/2000: 64 MB RAM and 266 MHz processor
- Windows XP: 128 MB RAM and 300 MHz processor
- A Sony Ericsson PC application installed on your computer. Applications are available on the CD that came with your phone and at www.SonyEricsson.com/support.
To install the USB cable:
1. Do not connect the phone to the cable yet. If available, insert the CD that came with your cable or with your phone.
2. Connect the USB cable to a USB port on your PC. With the CD inserted, the installation should go automatically without any information on the screen.
3. Without CD inserted, choose INSTALL FROM LIST OR SPECIFIC LOCATION, then click NEXT. Choose DON'T SEARCH, I WILL CHOOSE DRIVER TO INSTALL, then click NEXT.
4. Click HAVE DISK and then BROWSE. Select the driver on the CD or a downloaded driver at another location. Click OPEN and then OK.
5. Select USB CABLE DCU-11 in the models list and click NEXT. Click FINISH in the final wizard window.
To check the USB cable installation:
1. Select START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM > HARDWARE > DEVICE MANAGER. Find the USB cable under PORTS. Make a note of the cable's COM port number.
2. Exit to CONTROL PANEL window and double click PHONE MONITOR OPTIONS. Select COM PORTS tab and enable the COM port installed for the USB cable. Click OK.
To connect the phone to the PC using USB cable:
1. Connect the USB cable to the phone. Go to START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > PHONE AND MODEM OPTIONS. Select the MODEMS tab.
2. Highlight the modem driver for your phone, click PROPERTIES, select MODEM tab, and check that MAXIMUM PORT SPEED is set to 115200.
To start using a Sony Ericsson application:
1. PC: Go to START > PROGRAMS > SONY ERICSSON and start the application you want to use.
2. The first time you start a Sony Ericsson software, you need to enter some information about the phone and the SIM card.
3. The Mobile Phone Monitor icon will appear in the Taskbar. When a connection is established the checkmark will turn green.
NOTE: For more information about synchronization and synchronization settings, please see: How to synchronize the phone with a PC (K500/K700/S700/Z1010 series).
Troubleshooting:
Check the COM Port speed in PC:
1. Select START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL
2. Select SYSTEM > HARDWARE > DEVICE MANAGER
3. In the list, expand PORTS (make a note of the port DCU-10/11 uses).
4. Highlight DCU-10/11, right-click, and select PROPERTIES
5. Select PORT SETTINGS tab, set the desired speed to 115200 bps.
Check the COM port phone is connected to:
1. Select START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL
2. Select PHONE MONITOR > COM PORTS
3. Highlight the COM PORT you are using for DCU-10/11 (see note from step three above).
4. If the COM PORT is DISABLED, click on ENABLE
Check interference from other programs:
If PC Suite for P800/P900/P910 series is installed, click Phone Connect Link in PC taskbar and uncheck the COM port the USB cable uses.
Checklist Data Problems
Modem problem:
1. Check that a Ericsson / Sony Ericsson modem is installed:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Phone & Modems > Modem
2. Ask the customer to verify the information for the connection he has created for CSD / HSCSD or GPRS. Correct information is
obtained from the customers Internet Provider. If the customer is using GPRS, it is easier if he uses the DUN Wizard in order to create a connection:
Start > Program > Sony Ericsson > Dial-Up Networking Wizard
3. If the problem remains, ask the customer to uninstall the modem and the connection and start over again with installing the
modem, and creating a connection using the Dial-Up Networking Wizard.
4. Check that the correct port is activated in the "Phone Monitor Options":
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Phone Monitor Options > Com ports
Connection problem USB:
1. Check that the USB cable is correctly installed. This is preferably done from the Device Manager:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager
Here the name of the cable should be stated under the menu “Ports (COM & LPT)" e.g. DCU-11 if the cable is correctly installed.
2. Check that the port the USB cable is installed against, is activated in the "Phone Monitor Options":
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Phone Monitor Options > Com ports
3. For P800 / P900 the USB port should also be activated in the "Phone Connection Link". This menu is accessed by double-clicking on the
two black arrows in the System Tray, down by the PC clock. If there is no connection option called USB, the USB cable is not correctly installed.
4. Try to deactivate Firewall and / or Anti-Virus program.
Connection problem IR:
1. Check that there is a connection between the phone and the PC. If a connection exists, there should appear an icon in the System Tray
down by the PC clock which shows connectivity between the two units.
2. Check the speed on the IR-port in the PC:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Wireless Link > Hardware > Properties > Advanced > Speed Limit
Lower the speed to 115,200 bps or lower.
Synchronization problem:
1. Verify that the customer is using a supported application for synchronization, e.g. check MS Outlook version, Windows version, Synchronization program and version.
2. Check that there is a connection between the phone and the PC, e.g. via USB (see above).
3. For P800 / P900 verify that the correct application that the users wishes to synchronize against is selected in the “Sync Station Settings":
Start > Program > Sony Ericsson > P800 / P900 > Sync Station Settings
4. Deactivate Firewall and / or Anti-Virus program.
5. Check if the program "Shop at Home Select Agent" is installed or not:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs
If the program is installed, choose to uninstall it.
6. Make sure that the latest version of PC Suite is installed. If it isn´t, uninstall the
program and install the latest version. The same thing goes for the software in the phone.
